John Cena
WWE truly and surprisingly saved the best for last at WWE Extreme Rules with the Last Man Standing Match between John Cena and Batista.
The Animal would wisely work Cena’s legs early in the match. Kicks and chair shots were what the doctor ordered for Cena who sold the beating like a champ… pardon the pun.
It wouldn’t be until the two men got to the outside that Cena was able to get in some offense. However, once back in the ring Batista would continue to lay it on Cena’s legs by strapping on the Figure Four Leg Lock, à la Ric Flair.
Cena would briefly regain the upper hand, only to get nailed with a steel wrench on the outside. Batista threw him back in the ring, but would be laid out with an Attitude Adjustment on a steel chair. He got up up to his feet at the count of nine and sent the ref into the ropes, which crotched Cena who was on the top rope in the corner.
The champ was launched through a table in the corner, but was able to get up at the count of eight. Once on his feet, he was rammed into the steel ring post and then through the WWE barricade which crumbled at the force of Cena.
Once Cena got up at nine, Batista lost it and cleared off the announcers table and threw a monitor at Michael Cole in the process.
He set up the ring steps adjacent to the table and was going to Powerbomb Cena off them, but Cena countered with an Attitude Adjustment instead. The table shattered, but Batista got up at nine.
So, in an effort to put the match away once and for all, Cena set up a table in the ring, In a reversal of what happened moments earlier, it was Batista who reversed the move and put Cena through the table, but the champ got up at the count of nine.
He followed that up with a Batista Bomb. Cena again got up at nine.
Batista brought the steel steps into the ring, but Cena locked on the STF. Batista tapped, but to no avail as it was a Last Man Standing match. He would stay down until the count of nine.
Ever frustrated, Cena retreated to the outside, crotched Batista on the ring post and proceeded to duct tape his legs together so he could not get up.
And that would be how the match finished. Interesting to say the least! I don’t think we’ve ever seen that finish before.
John Cena retains the title in what surprisingly turned out to be the match of the night.
The champ celebrated as Batista floundered to bring the show to a close.
