WWE made significant changes on Friday by releasing a number of main roster talents.

The first name to surface in the cuts was Paul Burchill who had been with the company since 2005. Most recently he was part of the ECW brand, but his time with WWE drew to a close with the the retirement of that brand.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider reported that there was talk of moving him to the Raw brand as a babyface, but that never panned out.

The company also released Gregory Helms on Friday just a few weeks after his high profile arrest in Kentucky. He had been with WWE since the company purchased WCW in 2001.

There is speculation that his arrest may have played a factor in the company’s decision.

WWE Diva Maria Kanellis was also released on Friday. The move is very surprising giving the fact that she will be part of Celebrity Apprentice on NBC. She also has an album due out this spring.

She was a 2009 Slammy award winner as the WWE Diva of the Year.

UPDATE: WWE also released a referee late Friday afternoon.
