Vince McMahon has announced in a conference call with WWE shareholders that the Survivor Series pay-per-view will be coming to an end.
“We think Survivor Series is obsolete. It worked many, many years ago,” McMahon told investors, “but it’s outlasted its usage.” He went on to say that despite being one of the company’s four original PPVs (the others being the Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania and Summer Slam), “It’s one of the PPVs we will be looking at in terms of re-branding. We will no longer have that title anymore.”
The announcement follows a report noting that while buy-rates WWE’s newer ‘themed’ pay-per-views is on the rise, Survivor Series suffered an almost 30% fall from the previous year.
Future plans for the event are as yet unclear, although ‘re-branding’ suggests that it will receive a revised title and theme rather than being scrapped altogether. WWE.com currently features a poll encouraging fans to vote on new concepts for PPVs.
